Vanaf: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Patmos

Traditionally, this named author is believed to be the same person as both John the apostle of Jesus and John the author of the Fourth Gospel

Adela Collins, a theologian at the University of Notre Dame, writes:
"Early tradition says that John was banished to Patmos by the Roman authorities. This tradition is credible because banishment was a common punishment used during the Imperial period for a number of offenses. Among such offenses were the practices of magic and astrology. Prophecy was viewed by the Romans as belonging to the same category, whether Pagan, Jewish, or Christian. Prophecy with political implications, like that expressed by John in the book of Revelation, would have been perceived as a threat to Roman political power and order.

Revelations 1: Things you have seen - Part 1/3

John the Apostle exiled (Rev 1: 9-11)

Rev 1:19 Therefore, write down what you have seen, what is, and what is going to happen after these things.

Rev 1:9-11 I am John, your brother and partner in the oppression, kingdom, and patience that comes because of Jesus. I was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony about Jesus. (10) I came to be in the Spirit on the Day of the Lord, when I heard a loud voice behind me like a trumpet, (11) saying, "Write on a scroll what you see, and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea."

Because of his faith (the Word of God & the testomony about Jesus), John was banned to the island Patmos and it was there that he heard the loud voice of Jesus Christ giving him instructions to "Write on a scroll what you see, and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea."

Revelations 1: Greetings to the 7 Churches

Greetings to the 7 Churches (Rev 1: 4-8)

Rev 1:4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from him who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits that are before his throne;

Die 7 churches are named in Rev 1:11, also more fully described in Rev: 2-3

The figure Seven in Scripture indicates perfection and absoluteness. Also see: http://www.biblestudy.org/bibleref/meaning-of-numbers-in-bible/7.html

The 7 churches would represent the entire church age and the specific churches named represent thus the comprehensive condition of the entire church as well as the church timelines that would follow during the church history.

The greeting from the 7 Spirits refers to a qualitative aspect and as such refers to the 7 attributes of the Holy Spirit.

Isa 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and power, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.

Jesus Christ is the Faithful Witness, has risen from the dead, is the Prince of all kings on earth, as well as the King of all kings, loves us, has washed us from our sins and has made us Kings and Priests for God.

Rev 1:5-6 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loveth us, and loosed us from our sins by his blood; (6) and he made us to be a kingdom, to be priests unto his God and Father; to him be the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Verse 7 is the theme of Revelations; the second coming of Jesus Christ as comfort for the churches!

Rev 1:7 Look! He is coming in the clouds. Every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. So be it! Amen.

GOD the Father is called the Alpha and the Omega (Rev 1:8; 21:6), and this name is also applicable to the Son of GOD (Rev 1:11; 22:13)

GOD, the Almighty, whom can do everything; He reigns over all things and He regulates the flow of history. He will bring to fulfillment all that is written in Revelations.

Rev 1:8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, saith the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Openbaring 1 : Die Inleiding

Die Inleiding tot Openbaring (Op 1: 1-3)

Rev 1:1-3

John the Apostle (c. AD 6 — c. 100) was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He was the son of Zebedee and Salome and brother of James, son of Zebedee, another of the Twelve Apostles. Christian tradition holds that he outlived the remaining apostles — all of whom suffered martyrdom — and ultimately died of natural causes "in great old age near Ephesus".[1] The Church Fathers consider him the same person as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, and the Beloved Disciple.

Amen.

Revelations 1 : The Introduction

The Introduction to Revelations (Rev 1: 1-3)

Rev 1:1-3 KJV
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: (2) Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. (3) Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
  • The source of this revelation is GOD
  • Whom gave it to his Son, Jesus Christ,
  • to show his servants (born-again, Holy Spirit-filled Christian believers)
  • And he sent and signified it (gave signs and explanation of signs)
  • By his Angel (a messenger)
  • To give to his (Jesus's) servant John ( that is the Apostle John)
  • Whom was ordered to write down all that he had seen (the signs and explanation of the signs)

All that John had seen in regards to the Word of GOD and the testimony of Jesus, John has written down by means of signs, visions and words i.e. the signs and explanations of the signs, and as such GOD promises us an exceptional Divine blessing if we study and understand these signs.

Rev 1:3 "Blessed is the one who reads, as well as those who hear the words of this prophecy and pay attention to what is written in it because the time is near. "

This study is thus all about us studying the signs, and the explanation of the signs, enabling us to understand the revelations made by GOD.

The study of this prophecy will awaken a love and hunger as to the return of Jesus Christ.

Openbaring: Inleiding Deel 3 (Finaal)

Rev 1:19 Skryf die dinge op wat jy gesien het, die wat is, sowel as die wat gaan gebeur;

The divisies van Openbaring behels die;
  • Sewe seels
  • Sewe basuine
  • Sewe wraakskale
  • Sewe oordele
  • Sewe nuwe dinge

Die struktuur van Openbaring behels;

Revelations: Intro Part 3 (Final)

Rev 1:7 Look! He is coming in the clouds. Every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. Every tribe on earth will mourn because of him. This is true. Amen.

This verse gives us the whole theme of Revelations....the long awaiting second coming of Jesus Christ!
We have thus the promise of His return, the comfort and hope of the Churches. The book Revelations also closes with theme (Rev 22:20).

Revelations thus provides us with signs with meanings, that gives us an insight into
  • things that will happen up to the visible coming of Jesus Christ,
  • things that will happen during his coming, and
  • things that will happen after his coming.

Rev 1:19 Therefore, write down what you have seen, what is, and what is going to happen after these things.

The divisions within Revelations contain the;
  • Seven seals
  • Seven trumpets
  • Seven plagues
  • Seven bowls
  • Seven new things

Other than this, there are several parenthetical insertion within Revelations that breaks the sequence of the above ranges of judgements to supply more information and/or detail.

The structure of Revelations entails;
  • Introduction and greetings (Rev 1: 1-8)
  • The things that John had seen (Rev 1:9-20)
  • The things what is (Rev 2-3)
  • The things that is going to happen (Rev 6:1 - 18.24)
  • The coming of Jesus Christ (Rev 19:1 - Rev 20:3)
  • The Messianic kingdom (Rev 20:4 - Rev 20:15)
  • The new and eternal order (Rev 21:1 - Rev 22:9)
  • Promises and last warnings (Rev 22: 10 - Rev 22:21)

There is no reason to view Revelations as non-chronological as within Revelations there is no indication read as to why it is not chronological. In fact we read in several instances "After these things...." (Rev 4:1; 7:1,9; 18:1; 19:1).

Openbaring - Inleiding Deel 2

Hoe geseend inderdaad sal jy wees as jy lees wat geskrywe staan in Openbaring.

Openbaring as 'n profetiese openbaring gemaak deur Jesus Christus, is letterlik sowel as figuurlik.

Amen

Revelations - Intro Part 2

Rev 1:3 How blessed is the one who reads aloud and those who hear the words of this prophecy and obey what is written in it, for the time is near!

How blessed indeed you will be if you read what is written in Revelations.

Revelations as a prophetic revelation made by Jesus Christ, is literal as well as figuratively. This book must be viewed as being literal, except were it is otherwise obvious figurative speach, where it is obvious symbolic and in instances were it is highly improbable to be literal.

Revelations ".... is the revelation of Jesus Christ. God gave it to him to show his servants the things that must happen soon. He sent this revelation through his angel to his servant John" (Rev 1:1 ) and was addressed to the seven churches at the time in Asia. It is also however addressed to the the Church of Jesus Christ i.e all the churches of Jesus Christ throughout the ages of time that has followed.

The Holy Scripture is not a systematic composition, in other words theology, or history, or science, or any topic but it is a revelation from GOD. It reveals GOD's plan and goal throughout the ages in regard to the earth and humans.

Revelations is the most wonderful inspired book as it's name indeed depicts: It is a REVELATION!

Rights (C) 2011 Raymond D Lombard

Rev 22:6-7
(6) He said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord God of the spirits of the prophets has sent his angel to show his servants the things that must happen soon. (7) I'm coming soon! Blessed is the one who follows the words of the prophecy in this book."

Father God, I am so thankful for redemption thought Jesus Christ alone, for grace and for the hope in my heart by the power of the Holy Spirit which makes me exited and waiting on the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ, my Saviour, my Redeemer. In the wonderful naam of Jesus Christ, I give you al the honour and praise.

Amen

Openbaring - Inleiding Deel 1

Revelations - Intro Part 1

In 2011 I was blessed with the opportunity to attend some bible study classes in which we during the year studied Revelations. I have since shared some of my knowledge within my Sanlam Cell Group and we have decided late last year to study Revelations during 2012.

I have also decided to summarize the weekly discussions and to the pass it on to you to read.
In any event you are welcome to join our weekly meetings if you so prefer.

If you are or become interested in what I share with you, there is a full text by text commentary / book available @ R75 each. ( English version only available end of February 2012). What I pass on to you is indeed only a summary and full disclosure of the writers teaching (Raymond Lombard Ministries) is only available to you if you purchase the book and/or A4 notes for each chapter, also available @ R10 each.

You are welcome to order any material through myself or use the following contact details Tel 0219391898 or mail; vekparow@mweb.co.za.

So why the study of Revelations?

Rev 1:3 How blessed is the one who reads aloud and those who hear the words of this prophecy and obey what is written in it, for the time is near!

Revelations as a Bible book is derived from the Greek word apokaluyij 'apokalupsis' meaning 'revelation' (Strong's 602)...and Revelations as the last book of the Bible, is in indeed " The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John (Rev 1:1) "

John thus did wrote down what he had seen, what is, and what is going to happen after these things. (Rev 1:19 ) and Revelations , thus as a Prophesy (Rev 1:3, 22:7, 10, 18-19) is in fact also referred to as a Prophetic Apokaluptic writing, thereby depicting a exceptional character separating Revelations from all other books in the New Testament.
